It was December 21st, the Winter Solstice, and for once everyone was in high spirits. The war was over, and peace could be felt everywhere. Ba Sing Se had decided to celebrate this new calm with a dance during the solstice, to commemorate the turning of a new leaf. Repairs from the end of the war were almost finished, leaving the Earth King eager to show off the newly refurbished palace. The dance was to be a Masquerade Ball, held in the Royal Palace itself. Anyone with a small amount of status was to be invited, and the mob of popularity for it become so high that soon the only way to get in was with one of these invitations. Of course, that wouldn't stop those that couldn't get in from having their own party in the streets. Just as the suns light began to fade on the longest night of the year, the streets burst open into music and laughter and movement.
Velox had been confused when an invitation made it's way to him. His first concern was to how someone had found out his mailing location in the first place. Initially he had even thought the letter to be requesting his presence there as a guard. There were those out there that had some idea of his fighting prowess and it was his favorite method of earning money. Upon closer inspection, and to his utter surprise, though, he found that the letter was requesting him there as a guest in the ball. It was abnormal, to say the least. He had no idea of who would possibly want him to attend this. And somehow, he could not find it in himself to turn it down. He always enjoyed the solstice, after all.
Velox gracefully maneuvered the streets, taking care not to get any form of dirt on his clothing. He wore a finely tailored outfit consisting of various shades of silver and gray and white blended into each other in swirls, all over his slacks, his long shirt, even his vest and gloves. There was no ounce of color save for his eyes, which shone in a marvelously deep emerald green. They peered out through his choice of mask, a full face mask that was entirely gray with two eye slits, and a double swirl in black ink running over the left eye slit. Why he adored such a lack of color was unknown, but in his mind silver was a very precious shade to him. Perhaps it made him feel protected, unreadable.
Finally arriving at the palace, after resisting several different food vendors offering overly delicious smelling pastries, Velox presented his invitation to the doorman and was allowed entry through the massive front entrance. Immediately he was greeted be a cacophony of conversation and music played on string instruments. Apparently the ball was only just now beginning to get into the full swing of things as people simply waddled around and gossiped about rumors of even the earth princess secretly joining the ball in her own mask. He was unsure of where to go, so very uncomfortable with greeting new people. And as his mask obviously prevent him from enjoying the finger food, he finally decided upon making his way toward the band to admire their instruments.
